Wellington City Mission Whakamaru
Kensway was proud to partner with Wellington City Mission on the development of its transformative community facility, Whakamaru. Providing both Project Management and Quantity Surveying services, Kensway worked alongside the Mission, consultants, and contractors to deliver a project that not only met the Mission's aspirations but also exceeded community expectations.
This project began as a refurbishment but evolved into a complete demolition and rebuild after careful Value Engineering (VE) and consultation. Kensway provided end-to-end support, from concept design through to operational handover, ensuring critical funding deadlines were met and construction could begin while design was being finalised. Kensway’s role extended to managing community-funded budgets, coordinating cultural design elements with renowned Māori artist Len Hetet, and maintaining flexibility and collaboration throughout the process. We also facilitated numerous community tours, upheld strict health and safety standards, and worked closely with the Mission’s Building Committee to align all key stakeholders with project goals. Strong partnerships and trusted relationships with all stakeholders ensured successful delivery in October 2024.
Whakamaru features 35 transitional housing apartments, a commercial café and kitchen, a social supermarket, offices, a chapel, and meeting rooms. The facility also includes health and wellness services such as a medical clinic, dental surgery, and commercial laundry, as well as public amenities like a 24-hour toilet and shower. A central atrium encourages community interaction, while sustainable design elements such as solar panels and cross-laminated timber construction reflect a commitment to environmental responsibility.
